Meet the author, photographer, painter, traveler,...

My artwork is an expression of my delight in the natural world, my passion for color, and my faith. Often, out walking with my camera, I find myself deeply moved by the beauty around me. Sometimes the resulting photos are beautiful in themselves. Other times, they provide inspiration for my paintings. Once in the studio, brush in hand, my passion for color takes over. The resulting artwork usually has little or no actual resemblance to the reference photo, but rather is evocative of the joy I felt in that moment. My hope is that as you enjoy the images you will also experience some of the joy that motivated me to create them.

Yakker

For a break from work in the studio, I go for a walk, call up my pickleball partner, or, best of all, go kayaking. This image was taken by my daughter, sitting behind me in the double kayak, paddling out to Tatoosh Island, near Ketchikan, Alaska to look for eagles. They weren’t hard to find. Actually, they were perched everywhere, in trees, on rocks. What joy!

Hiker

This image is Cape Flattery, on the Makah Indian Reservation in my home state of Washington. The Cape is the farthest northwest point in the contiguous United States. What a humbling reminder of the vastness of the incredible natural world our God has provided for us, and how small we are.

Animal Lover

One of my favorite parts of the natural world is animals. What could be more endearing than bears fishing for salmon? Salmon fishing is a central part of the culture in New England where I grew up, in the Pacific Northwest, where I live now, and Alaska, which I visited this summer.

Gardener

Of course, as a nature lover, I would be a gardener. Although I normally insist on cleanliness, I find surprising joy digging in the dirt. It’s not just the pretty flowers outside my living room window. It’s more than that. It’s that I feel so close to God there. I am reminded of how wondrous it is that He has come down to earth, just for us, humble, imperfect, us.

Professor

How lucky I was to work here! This fountain is on the gorgeous campus of the University of Richmond, in Virginia, where I spent much of my career as an accounting professor.  I also taught at several other universities in the U.S., in Executive MBA programs at the Czech Management Center in Prague and the Vienna Business School. The most fun part of my job was leading student study trips throughout Europe, watching the students gain confidence as they realized they could manage trains, planes, buses, subway systems in a foreign country.
